* Albums That Ruled (My) World *

When Albums Ruled the World is documentary that I've seen few weeks ago on BBC four. By focusing on Golden Age of vinyl LPs (mid 60s to the late 70s) this documentary takes the viewers on the journey through music history. The albums that are mentioned are the albums that had biggest impact, that changed music history, forged careers, or set new artistic standards. The people interviewed were part of that history and therefore could share not only their opinions but also their own experiences. After I watched it, I discovered several related ones from the same season. Danny Baker's 3-part Great Album Showdown gets more personal. Danny and his guests select their favorite LPs from the Golden Era and talk about their choices and way they experienced music in those days. With 3 shows and different guests Danny covers 3 genres: Rock, Pop and R&B. All of these documentaries brought many of my memories back, from the first record I bought; records that I loved, shared with my friends and those that I still listen today. I never stopped being obsessed with vinyls. There is something truly magical about the whole ritual that happens after you buy the record: opening it, reading through the cover, checking out album art and then taking it out of the sleeve, putting the needle on it and playing it for the first time. In my world, using any other music format, physical or digital, could never replace this feeling. It is very personal, private experience that sometimes can't be explained and many times not even shared with anyone else. But tonight I will dig into my record collection, pick up some of my favorite albums from female artists and share part of that world with the listeners of Gimme A Beat.
